Network Administrator Internship

Position Summary

The Commonwealth Cyber Initiative (CCI) at Virginia Tech is seeking a Network Administrator to administer computer networks and systems in the CCI xG Testbed. We are looking for a Network Engineer to maintain a reliable, secure, and efficient data communications network in-lab and in-the-field for research and development on O-RAN and 5G & beyond technologies. The administrator will be responsible for installing and maintaining computer systems, monitoring performance, training users, and ensuring authorized access. Additional duties include maintaining system security, upgrading systems, and fixing hardware and software problems to support CCI research efforts and advanced wireless network architectures.

Required Qualifications

  • Knowledge of networking services and common networking protocols.
  • Knowledge of cloud services and network virtualization (Virtual Machines and Containers).
  • Knowledge of computer network and wireless network communication, including IPv4.
  • Computer proficiency and understanding of various types of hardware.
  • Demonstrated ability to working effectively within a diverse team.
  • Ability to problem solve and think critically to support troubleshooting.
  • Attention to detail to include the ability to build executive level presentations.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Solid background in Linux and Unix system networking.
  • Solid background in network virtualization (i.e. virtual machine, VLAN) and containerization (i.e. Kubernetes).
  • DevSecOps skills and scripting skills in python and bash.
  • Understanding of cloud computing and on-premises capabilities, including networking in Cloud/Edge Platforms.

Job Duties

70% Network Administration:
  • Maintaining computer networks and systems including software, mainframes, VPNs, routers and other physical hardware.
  • Virtual Machine and Container Management and Orchestration, as well as Cloud services configuration and federation.
  • Monitoring computer systems to improve network performance (availability, utilization, throughput, latency) and testing for weaknesses.
  • Ensuring network security in a cloud and on-premises architecture, and updating virus protection software.
  • Fixing software/hardware configuration issues and overseeing the installation and troubleshooting of end-user workstations.
  • Setting up user accounts, permissions and passwords.
  • Communicating networking issues to employees and management, especially in training new users.
  • Conducting research on network products for procurement, specifying system requirements, and managing lab inventory.
  • Defining network policies and procedures.
30% Technical Support:
Providing technical support, meetings and guidance for users.
