CCI xG Testbed Leads O-RAN Research

An Open-Source O-RAN Research Platform

Programmable, Completely Open, and Research-Ready

At Virginia Tech’s Commonwealth Cyber Initiative, we are pioneering the future of wireless through an advanced O-RAN research testbed. Our platform empowers researchers, industry partners, and government agencies to prototype and validate next-generation technologies on real hardware with 100% programmability.

Testbed Highlights:

  • Full-stack Programmability: Unliked “closed systems”, you can modify any component from 5G core to the radio signals in real-time.

  • 100% Open-Source: Built on a powerful stack including Open5GC (Core), srsRAN (Radio Access), and the O-RAN Software Community (OSC) controllers.

  • AI-Native Environment: Equipped with dedicated GPU-accelerated servers and an AI/ML framework to automate the training and deployment of intelligent network controller models.

  • Digital Twin Capability: A risk-free virtual environment that allows you to perfect your code before moving to a live, over-the-air deployment.

Our Testbed Architecture:

Our testbed features a complete O-RAN deployment built entirely with open-source components. This fully programmable architecture integrates every functional layer from Service Management (SMO) to Intelligent Controllers (RICs) to the virtualized Cloud (O-Cloud) and Radio Access (srsRAN), ensuring total transparency and flexibility for research-ready 5G systems.

Collaborate With Us

The CCI xG testbed is designed for high-impact partnerships. We provide Secure Remote Access via OpenStack, allowing the partners to run complex experiments on our hardware from anywhere in the world.
  • For Partners: Validate your proprietary or open-source solutions in a fully compliant, carrier-grade environment.

  • For Interns & Grad Students: This is the ultimate “full stack” wireless experience. If you are interested in Cloud Computing, AI/ML, Wireless Networks, or Network Security, this is where those fields meet.
